About AstroSugar

Join me on my adventures through the woods, watching the wildlife while peacefully existing amongst them. Or out under a sky of stars staring up into the cosmos. Maybe join me walking around the city, taking in the unique architecture and how the surrounding plants and world interact with it. All this is possible through the lense of my cameras. Let me show you the world as I see it, as I stylize it through my own take on photo processing and print prep.

I have a couple years of training as a photojournalist but find the news a bit... dry. I use that training for fundamentals but act off of feeling. I have thousands of photos in my personal library, but only those that elicit a reaction out of me are posted for sale. I shoot in both film and digital, utilizing Canon bodies and, for the most part, lenses. Specifically the Canon 6D and T5 for digital and RebelG for film. I do plan on offering custom frames as a regular option eventually, but for now the material cost and time needed are both too substantial for me to keep up.

Astrophotography is a passion project, each photograph takes roughly 200 hours of total exposure with my current workflow. I use a ZWO ASI294MM-Pro cooled astronomy camera as my capture device. This camera shoots in monochrome so I end up using 7 different filters to capture individual channels. These filters being Luminance, Red, Green, Blue, Hydrogen-Alpha, Sulfur II, and Oxygen III. Combining these channels and colorizing them is how I pull a color image from monochrome. "Why the heck shoot monochrome then!?" Because it gives the highest fidelity image. I shoot 20 hours each in LRGB and 40 hours each in SHO. I then have to do a lot of processing and behind the scenes work to make the image. I use a ZWO FF65 APO petzval refractor telescope. This quintuplet apochromatic astrograph is the absolute sauce for the camera I use. I love the process and love space so you will never see me charging a premium for this effort. Others possessing and enjoying the fruits of my labor means more to me than making a few extra dollars.

Unlike some other stores, I keep full res raw files to print from so you know you are getting the top quality I can offer regardless of the size of the print. I personally have my Orion nebula photo framed in a 20x30 size and it looks fantastic. The only time I ‘skimp’ on resolution is with film, but that's a limit of the format not a personal choice. I run my 294MM pro in bin1 (8k) resolution where others commonly run it in bin2 (4k). Whether you are here to browse and enjoy my photographs, or make a purchase, I deeply appreciate your eyes and hope you find joy in my work!
